Buying advice for connected lighting

Smart lighting starts with the system, not the light bulb

The most expensive smart lamp helps little if it does not fit your system. First decide whether you want to control individual rooms via Wi-Fi or build a larger system with a hub and automations.

AI-assisted text, editorially reviewed · Images are real product photos, not AI images · Details

The quick decision: For a single lamp, Wi-Fi is often sufficient. For many lamps, sensors and automations, a hub system is usually clearer. Matter can improve compatibility, but does not replace every manufacturer-specific function.

Wi-Fi, Zigbee and Matter without the buzzwords

Wi-Fi

Connected directly to the router. Simple for individual devices, but with many lamps not automatically the most suitable architecture.

Zigbee with a hub

A separate radio network for lamps and accessories. This can be more stable and easier to expand in a larger setup.

Matter

A standard for different platforms to work together. It does not mean that all of a manufacturer's special functions are available everywhere.

What a hub really needs to do

A hub makes sense if you want to manage scenes, sensors, switches, timed lighting or many rooms together. Philips Hue lists the Hue Bridge Pro with up to 150 lamps and 50 accessories. That does not make it the right solution for every household. For a small setup this expansion would usually be oversized.

Using floor lamps and light strips properly

Smart lamps are particularly suited to indirect light, recurring scenes and areas that you do not handle via the wall switch. A Hue Signe Gradient floor lamp, for example, is dimmable according to the manufacturer, supports Bluetooth and Zigbee and is intended as accent lighting. It does not replace planning the general lighting.

The question before your first purchase

Write down what the system should be able to do later. If it is about one lamp by the sofa, an app and a schedule are often enough. If light is to work together with buttons, sensors and several rooms, a system with a clear hub is worthwhile. Do not buy ten light bulbs first and then try to repair the architecture.

Checking compatibility in detail

Before buying, check the platform you want, the cap you need, the range at the place of use and whether a wall switch regularly cuts the power supply. A smart lamp that is permanently switched off at the mains loses its advantage. In rented flats, wireless buttons can be a better solution than interfering with the electrical installation.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Open only the answer you need right now.

Do I no longer need a manufacturer app with Matter?

No. Matter makes basic compatibility easier. Special functions, firmware updates and certain lighting scenes can still be tied to the manufacturer's app.

Is Wi-Fi always simpler?

Often, for a single device. With many devices, a hub and a separate radio network can be clearer.

Do smart lamps save electricity automatically?

They can help you switch light more selectively. But every connected component also has standby consumption.

What happens when the wall switch is off?

Without power, a smart lamp usually cannot be reached by app or by voice. For everyday use, suitable wireless buttons or a clear switch routine are therefore often more important than yet another lighting scene.
