Buying guide for screen workstations

Choosing a desk lamp: first the surface, then the model

For a screen workstation the brand is not what matters, but where the light lands. A lamp has to light the work surface without falling directly into the eye or reflecting in the display.

For most desks: An adjustable lamp with a wide beam is the safe choice. A monitor light bar only suits if screen shape, webcam and monitor thickness fit. Check this before buying.

The three sensible designs

Monitor light bar

It saves desk space and directs light downwards. It is unsuitable if the clamp covers the webcam or the monitor has no suitable top edge.

Clamp lamp

It brings light close to the task without using up space on the desk. The desk edge must be sturdy enough.

Lamp with base

It is more flexible with several workstations, but needs a free surface and a sensible position next to your writing hand.

What to look at before buying

Place the lamp to the side of the work surface. Right-handed people avoid shadows from their hand this way if the light comes from the left, left-handed people the reverse. The lamp should be dimmable and its head adjustable. For colour-critical work, a high colour rendering index can matter. Manufacturer lux figures always apply to a specific distance and say little without that distance.

A documented model note

The BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 is an example of when a monitor light bar can make technical sense: BenQ states USB-C power, monitor compatibility of 0.43 to 6 cm and an adjustable colour temperature. This comes from the manufacturer's data, not from any hands-on use by us. The question before buying stays the same: does the clamp fit your monitor, and do you really need the rear light?

What we do not promise

A lamp does not cure eye strain and does not replace ergonomic workstation design. If symptoms persist, screen distance, breaks and, where appropriate, an eye examination belong on the table.

Height and angle matter more than a data sheet record

The brightest lamp is no use if it is reflected in the screen surface. So aim the head not at the monitor but at the keyboard, paper and the surface in front of you. With a classic desk lamp, a side angle is usually better than light straight from the front. A diffuse shade or a well-shielded light source can avoid looking directly into the LEDs.

Which figures are genuinely comparable

With monitor light bars, compare the permitted monitor thickness, the power connection and the controls. With floor and clamp lamps, the reach of the arm, the mounting and the position of the lamp head are decisive. Lumens help as a rough indication of the amount of light. They do not replace a statement about how much light arrives on your actual work surface.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Open only the answer you need right now.

Is a monitor light bar enough as the only light?

Usually not. It lights the workstation, but not necessarily the room. A very dark background can raise the contrast with the screen unpleasantly.

Which colour temperature suits working?

Neutral white is often perceived as a more businesslike working mode. More important is that you can set the brightness suitably and do not choose an unnecessarily cold colour temperature.

When is a clamp lamp better?

A clamp lamp is practical if the monitor has an awkward top edge, you work with paper or want to move the pool of light flexibly. Before buying, you should check desk thickness, clamping range and arm reach.

How do I prevent reflections on the screen?

Aim the lamp head at the keyboard and work surface, not at the monitor. It is best to check the position with dark screen content, because disruptive reflections are then particularly obvious.
