The desk edge first: measuring the clamp width
Clamp lamps rarely fail because of the light, but because of the edge. Before you compare models, measure the board thickness exactly where the lamp is to sit. That includes obstacles: a protruding frame, a cable channel, a strongly rounded edge or an apron directly under the top. Any of these can pry loose a clamp that fits on paper.
The details in this comparison come from the product listings, not from independent measurements. According to the listing, the BIENSER clamp architect lamp with memory function has metal clips for desktops up to 5.6 centimetres. For the iZELL clamp light TBL235-BK the maximum opening is 6 centimetres according to the listing, and the same applies to the ZAPLIT rechargeable clamp lamp and the Glocusent clamp lamp with 36 LEDs. For the Lepro LED desk lamp, clamp-on the listing mentions a C-clamp base with foam padding, but no figure in centimetres. For the SKYLEO desk lamp, clamp-on the figure is also missing. Here the clamp width stays open, and if you have a thick desktop, ask the seller before buying.
A simple rule of thumb: if your desktop is just under the listing value, allow some margin, because padding and edge need play. We deliberately give no figure for usual desktop thicknesses, as it depends on the material and the manufacturer. A folding rule and a photo of the edge are enough. Padded headboards, thin glass tops and furniture with hollow chambers often give a clamp no grip, and with no documented hands-on testing it cannot be said how firmly a particular clamp holds in the long run.
Adjustable arm or gooseneck: which design suits you?
The word clamp lamp covers two designs. An adjustable arm consists of rigid segments with joints, it has reach and can be swung over the monitor. A gooseneck is a continuously flexible tube, more compact and precise, but with a smaller lit area. The listing says which design a model has, and it is worth a look: the product name sometimes promises something different from the description.
An example: the Lepro LED desk lamp, clamp-on uses the term adjustable arm in its title, but the listing description speaks of a gooseneck arm that can be bent into many angles. By contrast, according to the listing, the BIENSER clamp architect lamp with memory function has a long adjustable arm in a three-axis design with a lamp head that rotates through 360 degrees. According to the listing, the iZELL clamp light TBL235-BK and the ZAPLIT rechargeable clamp lamp have a 40 centimetre gooseneck that is flexible through 360 degrees.
Does a long adjustable arm fit on a small desk? That depends on the wall and shelves nearby. If you move the lamp often or also use it on a shelf or bed frame, a gooseneck is more flexible. If you want to swing the arm far over the keyboard and papers, an adjustable arm is the better choice. How stably an arm stays in position after longer use is open, as there is no documented hands-on testing.
Colour temperature, brightness and glare at the workstation
For the lighting of indoor workplaces, the standard BS EN 12464-1 applies, setting requirements for illuminance and glare at the workplace. A clamp lamp is usually an additional luminaire and does not replace the room lighting. It brings directed light onto paper, keyboard or handicraft as long as the room is not dark. A bright spot in a dark room tires the eye, because the contrast with the surroundings stays high.
The models differ in their colour temperatures. According to the listing, the BIENSER clamp architect lamp with memory function has three settings of 3,000, 4,500 and 6,000 kelvin, each with ten brightness levels. According to the listing, the Glocusent clamp lamp with 36 LEDs offers 1,800, 3,200 and 6,000 kelvin with five brightness levels. The Lepro LED desk lamp, clamp-on, the iZELL clamp light TBL235-BK and the ZAPLIT rechargeable clamp lamp state three colour modes and ten brightness levels, but no kelvin values. For background, our guide to colour temperature in kelvin explains how warm and cool light feel.
Be cautious with brightness. The listing for the SKYLEO desk lamp, clamp-on mentions up to 1,300 lumens with 112 lamp beads. That is an advertising claim with no manufacturer document, and without a measurement report such a figure says little about the amount of light on the desk. For the other models the product pages give no reliable lumen values. You will find a fuller assessment in the article How many lumens a desk lamp needs. If only the screen area needs lighting, a monitor light bar is often the simpler solution; more on this in Monitor light bar: when it makes sense.
USB power or battery
Almost all the clamp lamps mentioned here run on USB. According to the listing, the BIENSER clamp architect lamp with memory function and the iZELL clamp light TBL235-BK come with a 5 volt, 2 ampere power adaptor; for the iZELL the USB cable is 120 centimetres long according to the listing, and for the BIENSER the power cable is 1.5 metres. If you run the lamp from a computer, bear in mind that a USB port on a computer often delivers less power than a dedicated power adaptor, which can affect the brightness.
The ZAPLIT rechargeable clamp lamp is the cordless version: according to the listing it contains a 2,000 milliamp-hour battery, charged via USB-C. The product page regards the runtime figures in the listing (up to 35 hours at the lowest setting, five hours at the highest) as unsubstantiated, because the battery capacity and the stated power consumption do not match there. If you plan continuous use over several hours, mains power is the safer choice. The battery is worthwhile where no socket is free, for example at the bed or on a shelf.
Extra functions are convenience, not a necessity. According to the listing, the SKYLEO desk lamp, clamp-on has a timer that switches off after 45 minutes, and a memory function. According to the listing, the Glocusent clamp lamp with 36 LEDs switches off after 30 minutes. A memory function that remembers the last setting is also stated, according to the listings, for the BIENSER clamp architect lamp with memory function, the iZELL clamp light TBL235-BK and the ZAPLIT rechargeable clamp lamp.
Six clamp lamps compared
The table summarises the details from the respective product pages. All values are listing claims, and a missing figure means the page says nothing about it. No ranking follows from this, because whether a model fits depends on the edge, the desk and the use.
| Model | Arm | Clamp width according to the listing | Colour temperatures | Power supply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lepro LED desk lamp, clamp-on | Gooseneck arm, 54 LEDs | no figure in centimetres | 3 colour modes, 10 levels | USB |
| BIENSER clamp architect lamp with memory function | Adjustable arm, 80 LEDs | up to 5.6 cm | 3,000, 4,500 and 6,000 K, 10 levels per colour | USB, power adaptor 5 V/2 A |
| iZELL clamp light TBL235-BK | Gooseneck 40 cm, 23 LEDs | up to 6 cm | 3 colour modes, 10 levels | USB, cable 120 cm |
| ZAPLIT rechargeable clamp lamp | Gooseneck 40 cm, 61 LEDs | up to 6 cm | 3 colour modes, 10 levels | Rechargeable battery 2,000 mAh, USB-C |
| Glocusent clamp lamp with 36 LEDs | Gooseneck, 36 LEDs | up to 6 cm | 1,800, 3,200 and 6,000 K, 5 levels | USB, cable 2 m |
| SKYLEO desk lamp, clamp-on | Adjustable arm, 112 LEDs | no information | several colour temperatures | USB 5 V/2 A |
The number of LEDs alone says little about brightness, because chip size and drive are unknown. If you compare by wattage, also check whether the figure describes the lamp or only the power adaptor: for the iZELL clamp light TBL235-BK, the title shows 10 watts next to the words USB charger, the data table states 7 watts and another section states 10 watts maximum. With no documented hands-on testing, glare, ease of use and build quality remain open.
Which design suits whom?
Large workstation with space above the desk surface: An adjustable arm like that of the BIENSER clamp architect lamp with memory function suits here, provided the edge is up to 5.6 centimetres.
Small desk, shelf or bed edge: A gooseneck like that of the iZELL clamp light TBL235-BK or the Glocusent clamp lamp with 36 LEDs makes sense as an alternative to a long arm, because it can be aimed flexibly.
No free socket: According to the listing, the ZAPLIT rechargeable clamp lamp runs on a battery. According to the product page, the runtime is not reliably substantiated, so allow a reserve.
Warm evening light: According to the listing, the Glocusent clamp lamp with 36 LEDs has a 1,800 kelvin amber mode. The listing value for the blue light share cannot be verified, so a medical effect is not substantiated. If you want to influence your sleep deliberately, read our guide on light and sleep. Light therapy does not replace medical treatment.
More reach and many LEDs: According to the listing, the SKYLEO desk lamp, clamp-on has an adjustable swing arm, a rotating lamp head and 112 lamp beads. The clamp width is not in the listing, so ask before you buy.
How to plan your workstation
Count on three steps. First: measure the edge and compare it with the clamp width. Second: decide the position. If you write with your right hand, you will usually put the light on the left so that the shadow of your writing hand does not fall on the page; for left-handed people it is the other way round. Third: check the route to the socket or USB port, because the cable has to reach there without strain.
You can try out how the lamps work in the room in the lighting calculator. For more choice beyond clamping, see the overview of desk lamps. The guide Working in an eye-friendly way adds to the question of glare and breaks. For power adaptors: use the one supplied or an equivalent, and if in doubt ask a qualified electrician.
Also think about the back of the workstation. If the desk stands against a wall, an adjustable arm needs room to unfold, and a gooseneck must not press against shelves, otherwise the light cone moves with every movement. If you often change place, for example between desk and dining table, a light clamp with a short set-up is a benefit. With children at the desk, check that cables do not hang freely over the edge and that the clamp sits firmly, because a falling lamp is unpleasant and can damage the desk.
Finally, an honest note: we know all the models in this comparison only from listings, there are no manufacturer documents for any of them, and we did not have them in hand. If you buy a model, check the clamp grip, arm stability and flicker-free operation at your own desk after unpacking, and use your right of return if there are defects.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Open only the answer you need right now.
What desk thickness can a clamp lamp handle?
That is stated in the listing for the model, and for the lamps compared here it is 5.6 to 6 centimetres. The Lepro and the SKYLEO give no figure in centimetres, and the only option is to ask the seller.
Adjustable arm or gooseneck, which is better?
Neither is better across the board. The adjustable arm offers more reach for large desks, while the gooseneck is more compact and also fits on a shelf or bed frame.
Can a clamp lamp replace the room lighting?
No. It is a directed additional lamp for the work area, and there should be other light on in the room so that the contrast does not get too high.
How long does the battery of a clamp lamp last?
That cannot be said across the board. The listing for the ZAPLIT states up to 35 hours, but its product page regards this figure as unsubstantiated.
Which colour temperature is suitable for working?
Neutral to cool light suits work, while warm light is better for the evening. Several colour temperatures and dimming levels help to adapt the light to the time of day and the task.
Is the USB port on the computer enough to run it?
Often yes, but a computer port frequently delivers less power than a dedicated power adaptor. That can affect the brightness, and a power adaptor with 5 volts and 2 amperes is the safe choice.
