Pendant light over the dining table: measure the table and ceiling first
A pendant light over a dining table or kitchen island has a clearly limited job: it sets a point of light over the tabletop and gives the dining area a centre. It does not replace general lighting for the whole room, nor task lighting for fine work. That is why the choice starts not with the model but with three measurements: ceiling height, table height and table length.
All details on this page come from our product analyses. These are data and source analyses. With no documented hands-on testing, we sort out what manufacturers and listings state, and we have not measured anything. Manufacturer values are marked "according to the manufacturer", values from the listing "according to the listing". Where sources contradict each other, we name the contradiction.
As a rule of thumb, not a standard, it is often recommended to keep the lower edge of the lamp about 60 to 75 centimetres above the tabletop, so that it does not dazzle and the view across the table stays clear. How to work this out for your ceiling is explained in our guide on the drop height over the dining table.
Drop height: check the adjustment range and whether it can be shortened
The calculation is simple: ceiling height minus table height minus the desired gap between the tabletop and the lower edge of the lamp gives the length remaining from the ceiling to the lower edge. This result must fit within the adjustment range of the model. With pendant lights the problem is often at the short end: a lamp that cannot be shortened far enough hangs too low under a low ceiling.
The product pages show how different the figures are. For the LUMIÈRE Design Evanos pendant light, the manufacturer states a continuously adjustable drop of 10 to 200 centimetres, even after installation. The ceiling suspension is available, according to the manufacturer, in lengths of 65, 100 or 140 centimetres. The Lindby Simeon pendant light can be adjusted between 100 and 180 centimetres according to the listing. If you have a low ceiling, you can see at once: less than 100 centimetres is not provided for according to the listing.
The SENFAY LED pendant light 120 cm measures 120 centimetres according to the listing and hangs with a height adjustment of up to 150 centimetres. For the NVKE LED wave ring pendant light 40 cm, the listing states an adjustable wire 150 centimetres long. The EGLO Montefio pendant light can be adjusted manually between 880 and 1300 millimetres according to the data sheet. For the EGLO Barbotto, the sources give 110 centimetres as the height or maximum suspension length, and nowhere does it say whether this can be shortened. The EGLO Boyal 99624 is 110 centimetres high according to the data sheet, and here too it is open whether the suspension can be shortened.
The MATO LINEA pendant light 150 cm is a special case: the body of the lamp is 1500 millimetres long according to the data sheet, and according to the instructions the hanging height can be adjusted after installation without shortening a cable. Our advice: if the product page leaves it open, ask before buying whether and how the suspension can be shortened.
Table length and number of lights
The lamp should be clearly shorter than the table, so that there is room all round for sitting and for clinking glasses. As a rule of thumb, about two thirds of the table length or less is often given; this is a value from experience, not a rule. What matters is that the lamp does not extend past the table edges where you move about.
Two designs come into question: one long bar or several single pendants. The bar of the Lindby Simeon pendant light is 72.5 centimetres long according to the listing and carries four glass shades with E14 lamp holders. The SENFAY LED pendant light 120 cm measures 120 centimetres according to the listing, the MATO LINEA pendant light 150 cm 150 centimetres according to the data sheet. That suits long tables and kitchen islands, and is too much for small tables.
If you want to play with the number of lights, the LUMIÈRE Design Evanos pendant light offers, according to the manufacturer, sizes with one, two, three or four plate-shaped pendants. The EGLO Boyal 99624 and the EGLO Montefio pendant light are three-light, the EGLO Barbotto four-light. Important: more lights do not automatically mean more light. With lamp holders, the light bulb fitted determines the brightness, and with an integrated LED the manufacturer's figure does.
The NVKE LED wave ring pendant light 40 cm goes the other way: a single ring with a diameter of 40 centimetres according to the listing. That suits a smaller round table, whereas on a long dining table a single ring looks lost.
Integrated LED or lamp holder
After length, this is the most important design question. With a lamp that has a lamp holder, you choose brightness, colour temperature and dimmability yourself and can swap later. With an integrated LED, luminous flux and colour temperature are fixed, and if the LED fails you cannot simply replace it.
The Lindby Simeon pendant light (four E14 lamp holders, maximum 40 watts per holder according to the listing, no light bulbs included) and the EGLO Barbotto (four GU10 lamp holders, the light bulbs are replaceable according to the retailer listing) use lamp holders. The sources do not state the maximum permitted power of the GU10 holder. For the question of which cap suits which light bulb, the guides E27 or E14 and GU10 or E27 help.
The EGLO Montefio pendant light, according to the data sheet with three LED units included, 3000 kelvin (warm white) and energy efficiency class E, and the EGLO Boyal 99624 work without a replaceable light bulb. There too, according to the data sheet, there is no lamp holder for buying replacements. The Philips Hue Flourish pendant light, the LUMIÈRE Design Evanos pendant light, the SENFAY LED pendant light 120 cm, the MATO LINEA pendant light 150 cm and the NVKE LED wave ring pendant light 40 cm are LED lamps with an integrated light source.
To put the brightness in context: according to the manufacturer, the EGLO Boyal 99624 delivers a total luminous flux of 5850 lumens at 40.5 watts (three LEDs, 3000 kelvin). According to the manufacturer, the Evanos reaches 753, 2021, 2785 or 4409 lumens at 15, 30, 45 or 54 watts, depending on size. According to the manufacturer, the luminous flux of the Philips Hue Flourish pendant light is 2750 lumens (4000 kelvin) and 2550 lumens (2700 kelvin). How much light a room needs in the first place is explained in our article how many lumens per room, and the lumens to watts chart helps with converting watts.
Watch for contradictions in the details. For the Montefio, the listing (3 times 460 lumens) and the manufacturer data sheet (3 times 800 lumens) contradict each other. For the NVKE ring, according to our product page the energy label does not match the power figures: the listing states 48 watts and 4800 lumens, that is 100 lumens per watt, and class A begins under Regulation (EU) 2019/2015 at 210 lumens per watt. So recalculate such values before you rely on them.
Dimming: wall dimmer, remote control or app
Over a dining table, dimming is more than convenience: with a dimming level, the light can be adapted from cooking to the evening meal. There are three ways, and they partly rule each other out.
Wall dimmer: according to the manufacturer, the EGLO Boyal 99624 is dimmed by a wall dimmer from the list in the data sheet. So you need to check whether your dimmer is on it. For the Lindby Simeon pendant light the sources are contradictory: the Amazon listing mentions an external dimmer that is not included, while another retailer page gives Dimmable: No. In any case, the lamp itself contains no dimmer electronics. For the EGLO Barbotto no dimming function is documented, and with GU10 light bulbs you have to clarify in any case whether they are dimmable.
Remote control and app: according to the manufacturer, the LUMIÈRE Design Evanos pendant light is operated with a remote control or app, and a wall switch only switches on and off. The SENFAY LED pendant light 120 cm can be operated by remote control, app or wall switch according to the listing, but not through a wall dimmer. On the MATO LINEA pendant light 150 cm, dimming and colour temperature run only via the remote control, and an external LED dimmer is not possible according to the manufacturer. If this remote control is lost, control depends on a replacement transmitter.
Smart systems: according to the manufacturer, the Philips Hue Flourish pendant light is controlled by app via Bluetooth or, with a bridge, via Zigbee, optionally with the Hue dimmer switch. On the question of how smart lamps get along with the traditional light switch, read smart lamps and light switches.
The EGLO Montefio pendant light cannot be dimmed: according to the manufacturer it is not dimmable and is operated by the wall switch. That is not a flaw if you only need a fixed light over a dining table anyway, but you should know it before buying.
Connection at the ceiling rose
Pendant lights hang from a ceiling rose, not from a socket. That applies to almost all the models named here. According to the data sheet, the EGLO Montefio pendant light needs no socket and is operated by the wall switch. For the Lindby Simeon pendant light, no source mentions a plug; the details give 230 volts, Class I and IP20. For the NVKE LED wave ring pendant light 40 cm, a plug is not mentioned.
With a hard-wired 230 volt connection, installation is, if in doubt, a job for a qualified electrician. That applies especially if you first have to set up or replace the ceiling rose, if there is no earth conductor, or if you are unsure about terminals and cables. According to the manufacturer, the Philips Hue Flourish pendant light needs a ceiling rose with an earth conductor (Class I). According to the instructions, the MATO LINEA pendant light 150 cm is connected to a terminal, and a plug is not provided.
Weight is part of the calculation: the EGLO Boyal 99624 weighs 2.77 kilograms according to the data sheet, the EGLO Barbotto 3.73 kilograms according to the retailer listing. The ceiling fixing has to carry that. For concrete, take a look at hanging a lamp from a concrete ceiling.
On the IP rating: for the lamps named, the documents mostly give IP20, that is, dry indoor rooms only. The IP rating is given as an IP code under BS EN 60529. For steam or splashing water above the kitchen worktop IP20 is not enough, and for the bathroom the bathroom zones under BS 7671 Section 701 also apply, see IP rating in the bathroom. Above a hob, no document says anything about the suitability of the MATO LINEA pendant light 150 cm.

Which design suits whom?
Long table or kitchen island: bars and rows of pendants suit here. The MATO LINEA pendant light 150 cm, SENFAY LED pendant light 120 cm and Lindby Simeon pendant light cover different lengths. The Simeon needs its own E14 light bulbs for this, while the other two have an integrated or built-in LED according to the product page. If you would rather hang several pendants, look at the LUMIÈRE Design Evanos pendant light, because the number and drop can be adjusted according to the manufacturer.
Small table with a low ceiling: here the minimum clearance and the ability to shorten the drop count. A ring such as the NVKE LED wave ring pendant light 40 cm or a lamp with a large adjustment range gives you more room than a model with a height of 110 centimetres and an open question on shortening, such as the EGLO Boyal 99624 or the EGLO Barbotto.
Warm, even light without an app: the EGLO Montefio pendant light and the EGLO Boyal 99624 use 3000 kelvin (warm white) according to the data sheet, the Boyal also with a wall dimmer. If you want to control colour temperature and scenes smartly, the Philips Hue Flourish pendant light offers the manufacturer's ecosystem and a dimmer switch.
Flexible with light bulbs: if you later want to change colour temperature or brightness yourself, only a model with a lamp holder remains, that is the Lindby Simeon pendant light or the EGLO Barbotto. For no model on this page is there documented hands-on testing by us, and we deliberately give no ranking.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Open only the answer you need right now.
How high should a pendant light hang over the dining table?
As a rule of thumb, the lower edge hangs about 60 to 75 centimetres above the tabletop; this is not a standard. Work out ceiling height minus table height minus this gap, and check whether the result fits the adjustment range.
How long can the lamp be in relation to the table?
As a rule of thumb, at most about two thirds of the table length, so that there is room all round. A bar such as the 150 centimetres of the MATO LINEA suits only long tables or islands according to the data sheet.
Is an integrated LED or a lamp holder better?
That depends on what you need. A lamp holder (E14, GU10) allows brightness and colour temperature to be changed later, while an integrated LED fixes both. For the EGLO Montefio, according to the data sheet there is no lamp holder for buying replacements.
Can I dim any pendant light?
No. According to the manufacturer the EGLO Montefio is not dimmable, and the MATO LINEA can, according to the manufacturer, be dimmed only by remote control, not through an external dimmer. Check before buying whether your wall dimmer suits the model.
May I connect the pendant light myself?
With a hard-wired 230 volt connection at the ceiling rose, installation belongs, if in doubt, in the hands of a qualified electrician. That applies especially without an existing earth conductor or with unclear wiring in the ceiling rose.
Is IP20 enough over the kitchen island?
IP20 gives no protection against water and applies only to dry indoor rooms. Over a hob, the manufacturer's documents should expressly state suitability. The IP code is set out in BS EN 60529.
