What a night light in a child's room should do
Before you choose a model, it is worth asking which job the light should do. Three situations come up again and again with children: the child does not want to fall asleep in complete darkness, you have to nurse, feed or change the child at night without switching on the ceiling light, or the child goes to the toilet alone and needs to see the way. Each of these jobs calls for a different design, and no single device covers all three equally well.
The first job is about a calm bedtime ritual. Here it matters that the light stays very dim and switches itself off. For the second job, you must be able to work without glare, with one hand and half asleep. That points to touch or remote control operation and to a light source you can place next to the bed. For the third job, a sensor that switches the light on only with movement and darkness makes sense.
In this guide we describe only what manufacturer and listing details provide. We had no use of our own and took no measurements, so the models are classified with no documented hands-on testing. On health: light is one building block of the sleep environment and no substitute for paediatric advice on sleep problems. Light therapy does not replace medical treatment.
It helps to walk through a typical evening and a typical night before buying. Where is the bed, where is the changing area, how far is the way to the bathroom? A device that suits the bed does not help in the hallway, and the other way round. Many families therefore manage better with two small lights than with one big all-rounder: one at the bed, one along the way. You can find more rooms and lighting zones in the home lighting overview.
Colour temperature and brightness: what matters at night
Colour temperature is given in kelvin. Low values mean warm, yellowish light, high values cool, bluish light. For the night, warm light is the usual choice. How light and sleep are connected is explained on the light and sleep page, and the basics of colour temperature are under colour temperature in kelvin.
With night lights, the lowest level is often more important than the kelvin figure. A device that switches only between medium and very bright helps little at the bed. The listings rarely give a luminous flux. The Auxmir LED night light for children's beds gives, according to the listing, neither luminous flux nor kelvin, but five-level and at the same time smooth dimming and the term warm white. The Suright plug-in night light, two-pack gives, according to the listing, smooth dimming from 15 to 100 per cent and 3000 kelvin warm white, but likewise no luminous flux. The AUVON plug-in night light with PIR motion sensor states, according to the listing, smooth dimming from 1 to 50 lumens, which makes it the only device in this selection with a lumen figure in the listing.
Colour-change functions are common on children's devices, for example on the JolyWell egg-shaped touch night light with seven colours and a warm light, or on the Hama LED night light Color with colour change. For the night at the bed, though, the warm light counts. Colourful modes, flashing or strobe, as listed in the offer for the Auxmir LED night light for children's beds, are not needed for orientation, and in a child's sleeping area they should be switched off. Before buying, check whether the device returns to the warm level when switched on or saves the colour last selected. According to the listing, the Auxmir LED night light for children's beds saves the brightness and colour of the last setting.
Rechargeable night light at the bed and changing area
A rechargeable night light stands where no socket is within reach: on the bedside table, on the chest of drawers at the changing area or on the floor next to the bed. You need no cable that a child can grab, and you only have to think about charging time. On the other hand, runtime figures in listings are often contradictory or refer to the darkest level. You should therefore plan with the figure for the bright level if you need the light for longer at night.
The Auxmir LED night light for children's beds gives, according to the listing, a 3000 mAh battery with up to 310 hours at the lowest and 19 hours at the highest level, a charging time of four to five hours via USB-C and an auto-off timer of 1, 2, 4 or 6 hours. According to the listing, it can be operated by remote control, touch surface or buttons on the base. According to the listing, the egg shape measures 100 by 107 millimetres. Neither the listing nor a manufacturer document gives an age recommendation, and you should keep the hidden hanging loop out of the child's reach.
The JolyWell egg-shaped touch night light gives, according to the listing, runtimes of up to 100 hours at the darkest and 5 hours at the brightest level, smooth dimming by a long press on the top and a housing made of BPA-free PC and ABS. The product page points out a contradiction here: the listing gives two battery sizes and two runtimes, so the battery and power figures do not fit together. If you want to rely on a runtime, you should clarify this before buying.
The Diboniur silicone cloud night light is a silicone light with three brightness levels, seven colour gradients, a built-in 900 mAh battery and a 30-minute timer. According to the listing, one charge lasts 13 to 36 hours, and the listing names newborns up to older children as the target group. The listing gives no luminous flux and no standard for children's products. The device is classified with no documented hands-on testing, and the age recommendation comes from the listing alone.
Plug-in night light with sensor for the hallway and the way to the bathroom
A plug-in night light needs no battery, no charging and no space on a piece of furniture. It is the suitable design for the hallway, the stairs or the route to the bathroom. Note that the device is an orientation light, not a work light and not a toy. Sockets are also a topic of their own for toddlers, and where in doubt, safety covers for the other sockets help.
The AUVON plug-in night light with PIR motion sensor has, according to the listing, a motion sensor and a separate dusk-to-dawn sensor. In auto mode it detects movement at three to five metres over 120 degrees and switches off after 60 seconds without movement; in night mode only the light sensor works. The listing gives five brightness levels, a housing with V-0 fire protection and dimensions of 5.5 by 5.5 by 3.8 centimetres.
The Suright plug-in night light, two-pack is, according to the listing, likewise a two-pack with dusk-to-dawn and motion sensor. In auto mode it lights for 30 seconds on movement, with a range of three metres and 120 degrees. According to the listing it draws 1.5 watts, and the light is angled downwards to reduce direct glare. What standby consumption arises in continuous operation remains open.
The Hama LED night light Color reacts, according to the listing, to ambient light via a dusk-to-dawn sensor, it has colour change and measures 5.8 by 5.8 by 5.1 centimetres. The listing explicitly presents it as a soft ambient light and a low-level light under the bed. It names no motion sensor, so it switches by ambient brightness, not by movement. A luminous flux is not documented.
If you would rather connect a light permanently to the wall or ceiling, that is work on the house wiring: where in doubt, contact a qualified electrician.
Sleep trainer alarm clock: colours instead of clock time
Younger children cannot yet read the clock, but they understand colours. Sleep trainer alarm clocks make use of this: one colour means sleep, another means get up. They solve a different problem from a night light, namely the question of from when the child should stay in bed. With these devices, the night light is an extra.
The FiveHome children's alarm clock A100 works, according to the listing, with red for sleep and green for get up. According to the listing, the night light offers ten colours and three brightness levels in warm white, and the display brightness can be adjusted. According to the listing, the device works only on the mains cable, but saves the time and alarm setting after a power cut. According to the listing there are timers of 15, 30 and 60 minutes, four ringtones and two alarm sets for waking and sleeping, which do not distinguish between weekdays and weekends.
The Alecto BC110BE SIMON shows, according to the listing, blue with a moon for sleep and orange with a sun for get up. According to the listing, it can be used cordless and charged via USB, the cable is 200 centimetres long, and the night light has seven modes with adjustable colour and brightness. The listing gives no figure for the brightness of the night light.
The two devices work with different colour rules. What matters is that you explain the rule to the child once and do not switch devices. Whether a sleep trainer helps children sleep through the night in the long term is not documented by the listings.
Comparison of the eight models by use
The table sets the details of the product pages side by side. Empty fields mean that the listing names nothing on that point. All values are according to the listing, not from our own measurement.

Which design makes sense for whom
For parents of an infant who nurse or change the baby at night, a dimmable rechargeable light next to the changing area is an obvious choice, for example the Auxmir LED night light for children's beds or the JolyWell egg-shaped touch night light. The lowest level matters, and so does operation without looking. For toddlers who go to the toilet alone, a sensor light in the hallway makes more sense, for example the AUVON plug-in night light with PIR motion sensor or the Suright plug-in night light, two-pack. If you want to accustom a child to fixed getting-up times, look at the FiveHome children's alarm clock A100 or the Alecto BC110BE SIMON.
If your child is afraid of the dark, a soft silicone light such as the Diboniur silicone cloud night light can support a bedtime ritual. The listing promises a calming effect but does not document it. That is our classification by design type, not a manufacturer commitment and not hands-on testing.
In the bathroom the IP rating also counts: plug-in night lights without an IP rating do not belong in areas where splashing water can occur. The bathroom zones are governed by BS 7671 Section 701, and the IP rating is stated according to the IP code (BS EN 60529); more on this under IP rating in the bathroom. And if you want to plan the child's room as a whole, the lighting calculator helps with the question of which lighting zones you need to cover.
Night lights are not toys, even if some look like them. The Diboniur silicone cloud night light names, according to the listing, the age group baby and children, but no standard for children's products. For the Auxmir LED night light for children's beds, any age recommendation is missing according to the product page. Especially with rechargeable devices that a toddler can pick up, a look at the instructions is worthwhile. Cables belong out of the child's reach, and lights with a flashing or strobe mode stay switched off in the sleeping area.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Open only the answer you need right now.
Which night light suits nursing?
A dimmable rechargeable night light next to the bed or changing area that can be operated with one hand. According to the listing, the Auxmir light can be controlled by remote control, touch or button and switched off with a timer.
Socket or rechargeable battery, which suits better?
That depends on the location. The rechargeable battery suits bed and changing area, the socket suits the hallway and the way to the bathroom. There is no general superiority.
Do I need a motion sensor in the child's room?
Not necessarily. At the bed, a permanently dimmed light is calmer. In the hallway, a sensor switches the light on only with movement; according to the listing, the AUVON switches off again after 60 seconds without movement.
How bright may a night light be?
Bright enough that you can make out the way, and no brighter. We give no limit value. According to the listing, the AUVON dims from 1 to 50 lumens, and for most of the other models the luminous flux is missing.
From what age is a night light suitable?
The manufacturer determines that. The Diboniur silicone light names, according to the listing, the age group baby and children, without a test standard. For the Auxmir the age recommendation is missing, so check the instructions.
Does a sleep trainer alarm clock help with sleeping through the night?
That is not documented by the listings. The devices use colours to show when it is bedtime and when getting up is allowed. Whether your child accepts the rule depends on age and habit.
