What a corner lamp is meant for in the corner of the room
The corner is often the darkest part of a living room. Furniture rarely fits neatly there, and a ceiling light in the middle of the room reaches the corner only weakly. A corner lamp is built for this: it stands slim and tall in the angle, shines onto the two adjoining walls or upwards, depending on the design, and spreads the light over an area instead of setting a single point.
It is important to be clear about the job. Most of the corner lamps that we evaluate in our product analyses are colour and mood lamps with LED strips in the pole. They suit accent lighting beside a sofa, TV or sideboard. According to the details available, they are not intended as the sole lighting of a room. If you are looking for a classic standard lamp with a shade, a tripod or an arc, you will find the right designs in the overview of all floor lamps.
A corner lamp also does not replace task lighting. For reading or handicrafts, what counts is where the light falls and how glare-free it is, not just how colourful the column glows. The easiest way to balance room light, zone light and accents is in the lighting calculator, before you choose a lamp.
Height and footprint: what the corner dictates
Before you compare light and technology, measure the corner. The height of the column determines how much wall area the light reaches and how prominent the lamp is in the room. The models in our range are 136 centimetres (Govee RGBIC corner lamp 136 cm silver), 146 centimetres (riyo RGBIC corner lamp 146 cm), 160 centimetres (ONSTUY RGB corner lamp 1.6 m) and 165 centimetres (TRUMPETS YK32 RGB floor lamp 165 cm), in each case as stated in the listing.
Under sloping ceilings or in low corners of older buildings, a shorter column looks more balanced; with high ceilings the pole can be longer. Several of these lamps consist of pole segments that plug together. According to the listing, the TRUMPETS lamp can be shortened by one or two sections, and the ONSTUY consists of a main body and three tube segments. Also check the footprint of the base before buying: several listings give an iron base in a rectangular or round shape, which still takes up floor space.
Also plan the cable route. The socket is not always within easy reach in corners, and a visible cable behind the sofa spoils the effect of a slim column. Product photos are no substitute for dimensions, so hold a folding rule to the corner before you order.
RGB, RGBIC or white light: which lighting technology suits
With simple RGB, the whole strip shows the same colour at any given time. With RGBIC, individual sections can be controlled independently, so colour gradients appear along the height of the column. This is the most important technical difference between the corner lamps on this page. The ONSTUY RGB corner lamp 1.6 m and the TRUMPETS YK32 RGB floor lamp 165 cm belong, according to the listing texts, to the RGB class with 16 million colours. The Govee RGBIC corner lamp 136 cm silver is advertised with RGBIC technology according to the listing, as is the riyo RGBIC corner lamp 146 cm, which uses 168 LEDs (84 RGB and 84 white) according to the listing.
If you need white light for the evening or for daytime, pay attention to the colour temperature range. The listing for the riyo RGBIC corner lamp 146 cm gives 2,800 to 6,500 kelvin, the Govee RGBIC corner lamp 136 cm silver 2,700 to 6,500 kelvin, and the Govee uplighter wave lighting RGBICWW likewise 2,700 to 6,500 kelvin. These are listing claims and are not independently confirmed. For pure RGB columns without a dedicated white channel, we expect a white mixed from colour channels, which can differ from the familiar home-lighting tone. What the kelvin figures mean for the mood is explained in the guide to colour temperature in kelvin.
A special case is the uplighter approach. According to the manufacturer (model H60B0), the Govee uplighter wave lighting RGBICWW is a lamp with three separate light zones: an upper zone with a moving wave pattern on the wall and ceiling, a middle mood zone and a lower zone for normal room light. Govee expressly states that all three zones never light up at the same time. Whether that is enough for you depends on whether you want mainly indirect light on the wall or coloured effects along the column.
Light output: why lumen figures on corner lamps need caution
Brightness is the least certain figure in this product group. For the Govee RGBIC corner lamp 136 cm silver, the listing gives 1,000 lumens. For the Govee uplighter wave lighting RGBICWW, the listing also gives 1,000 lumens, but according to the instruction manual they apply expressly only to the lower light zone and not to the lamp as a whole. For the riyo RGBIC corner lamp 146 cm, the listing title carries a value of 2,400 lumens, whereas the official product data sheet gives 2,100 lumens at 24 watts. We put both figures side by side and do not accept the higher value as verified.
For the ONSTUY RGB corner lamp 1.6 m and the TRUMPETS YK32 RGB floor lamp 165 cm, the listing gives no luminous flux at all. How bright these columns are cannot be derived from the documents. The ONSTUY listing also has an energy label with a product data sheet attached, which on our review belongs to a different variant and therefore cannot count as a value for this lamp.
In practice this means: plan corner lamps as zone lighting alongside a main light source. How much light a room needs overall depends on area and use; the calculation methods are explained in the guides on lumens per room and in the lumens-to-watts chart. In this logic, a corner lamp with an undocumented light output is good for atmosphere, not for reading or working.
Controls and smart home
Almost all models can be controlled by a Bluetooth app, and most also by remote control. According to the listings, this applies to the ONSTUY RGB corner lamp 1.6 m, the TRUMPETS YK32 RGB floor lamp 165 cm and the riyo RGBIC corner lamp 146 cm. The riyo also gives a 24-button remote control and a cord switch, and all three state a built-in microphone for the music mode. Connection to Matter or Alexa is not mentioned in the details available for these three models, though we do not conclude from that that it is not possible. The manufacturer's app remains the route in this case.
It is different with the Govee lamps. According to the listing, the Govee RGBIC corner lamp 136 cm silver supports voice commands via Alexa or Google Assistant and a connection via Matter. For the Govee uplighter wave lighting RGBICWW, the manufacturer also gives Alexa, Google Assistant and Matter, and the manual lists Bluetooth, Wi-Fi in the 2.4 gigahertz band and Matter as wireless routes. If you use an existing smart home system, check before buying whether the lamp fits it. The basics of the platforms are explained on the page on smart lighting.
A few notes on operation: a cord switch or a remote control helps if the socket is behind the sofa and you do not want to open the app every time you switch on. Also bear in mind that music sync and scene modes mainly provide effects that, once set up, you will probably rarely change.
Five corner lamps compared
The table summarises the details from the individual product analyses. All values come from listings or manufacturer documents; we have not taken any measurements, and we did not have the lamps in hand. The shop shows the current price; the table does not state it.
| Model | Height (listing) | Lighting technology | Light output | Controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| riyo RGBIC corner lamp 146 cm | 146 cm | RGBIC, 168 LEDs (84 RGB, 84 white), 2,800 to 6,500 K according to the listing | 2,400 lm in the title, 2,100 lm in the product data sheet | Bluetooth app, 24-button remote control, cord switch |
| Govee RGBIC corner lamp 136 cm silver | 136 cm | RGBIC, 16 million colours, 2,700 to 6,500 K according to the listing | 1,000 lm according to the listing | Govee app, Alexa, Google Assistant, Matter |
| Govee uplighter wave lighting RGBICWW | not stated | Three light zones, RGBICWW, 2,700 to 6,500 K according to the listing | 1,000 lm according to the manual, lower zone only | Govee app, Alexa, Google Assistant, Matter |
| ONSTUY RGB corner lamp 1.6 m | 160 cm | RGB, 16 million colours, 234 dynamic modes | not stated | Bluetooth app, remote control |
| TRUMPETS YK32 RGB floor lamp 165 cm | 165 cm, can be shortened | RGB, 16 million colours | not stated | Bluetooth app, remote control, timer |
How to read the table: the three models with a documented light output are the Govee lamps and the riyo. For the two RGB columns, how bright they are remains open. The Govee uplighter wave lighting RGBICWW is the only one with three separate zones, and according to the listing the Govee RGBIC corner lamp 136 cm silver is the most open column to other systems in this comparison.
Which corner lamp suits whom
Suits you if you want colour gradients along the height and are looking for some reserve of brightness: the riyo RGBIC corner lamp 146 cm. Work with the 2,100 lumens from the product data sheet, not the title value. An alternative to this lamp is the Govee RGBIC corner lamp 136 cm silver, which with similar technology relies on Matter and voice control, but according to the listing gives a lower light output.
Suits you if you want indirect light on the wall and ceiling and a moving wave pattern: the Govee uplighter wave lighting RGBICWW. Note that, according to the manufacturer, the three zones do not light up at the same time and the 1,000 lumens apply only to the lower zone. You will find more uplighter designs without colour effects in the overview of uplighters.
Suits you if the corner is mainly meant to provide effect, for example beside the desk or in a playroom: the ONSTUY RGB corner lamp 1.6 m and the TRUMPETS YK32 RGB floor lamp 165 cm. Both are simple RGB columns without a documented light output, so they only make sense as an additional zone. If you want to compare slim light columns of a different design, look at the overview of LED light columns.
If you want to use coloured light as light therapy, you should know that light therapy does not replace medical treatment, and mood lamps are not designed for it. If you have doubts about the electrical installation, a qualified electrician can help.
Check before buying
Five checkpoints can be derived from the documents, and they help with every corner lamp:
- Measure the height of the corner and compare it with the column height in the listing.
- Look for the light output: is there a lumen value, and does it match the data sheet or manual?
- Clarify the technology: RGB for one colour at a time, RGBIC for gradients, a dedicated white channel for home lighting.
- Check the controls: app only, or also Matter, Alexa and Google Assistant?
- Plan the cable route and switch, especially for sockets behind furniture.
If a detail is missing, we do not write it in. On this page that applies to the height of the Govee uplighter wave lighting RGBICWW and to the light output of the ONSTUY RGB corner lamp 1.6 m and the TRUMPETS YK32 RGB floor lamp 165 cm. For putting them in context, only the honest statement remains: with no documented hands-on testing and no documented brightness, these models are accent lighting, nothing more.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
Open only the answer you need right now.
What is a corner lamp meant for?
For zone and mood lighting in the corner of a room. It uses a narrow footprint, lights the adjoining walls or upwards depending on the design, and according to the details available does not replace general lighting.
RGB or RGBIC for corner lamps?
RGBIC, if you want colour gradients along the height. With RGB the whole strip glows in one colour, whereas with RGBIC sections can be controlled individually.
How bright is a corner lamp?
That depends on the model and is often unclear. The listings give 1,000 lumens (Govee) or 2,400 lumens in the title (riyo, 2,100 in the product data sheet), and for two RGB columns the figure is missing entirely.
Can a corner lamp be controlled with Alexa?
That depends on the model. According to the listing, the Govee lamps give Alexa, Google Assistant and Matter, while for riyo, ONSTUY and TRUMPETS only the app and remote control are mentioned.
Which height fits my corner?
Measure the corner and plan the column height somewhat below it. The models compared range from 136 to 165 centimetres, and several can be shortened using pole segments.
Can I read with a corner lamp?
Only to a limited extent. A corner lamp provides zone lighting, and for two models no light output is documented. A directed lamp is better suited to reading light.
